Nobody Is Coming to Make You a Man. That Has Always Been Your Job.

There is a version of this post that blames the culture, the education system, the absence of fathers, the collapse of institutions, the algorithm, the economy, the church, the media, and every other external force that has made it harder to become a formed, disciplined, purposeful man in this generation.

That version is accurate. Those things are real. The formation systems that used to exist have largely failed, and the men who grew up inside that failure were not given what previous generations received without asking for it.

And none of that changes what is true right now, today, about whose job this is.

Nobody is coming to make you a man. That has always been your job. The systems that were supposed to help have mostly failed. The generation before yours did not pass down what they should have. The institutions are broken. The culture is actively hostile to the kind of man you are trying to become.

None of that is an excuse. It never was.

What previous generations had that you do not

Rites of passage. Military service that was nearly universal and came with genuine hardship and genuine brotherhood. Trade apprenticeships where a young man spent years working alongside older men who modeled what competence and responsibility looked like. Faith communities that made real demands and held men to them publicly. Extended family structures where uncles, grandfathers, and community elders provided formation that the nuclear family alone could not.

Most of those structures are gone or attenuated to the point of uselessness. The man who grew up in the last thirty years grew up in an environment where almost none of those things were available to him in their original form.

This is a real loss. It is also an explanation, not an excuse. The absence of formation systems does not eliminate the need for formation. It relocates the responsibility.

If the system did not build you, you build yourself. Not from nothing, not alone, not without community, but without waiting for someone else to notice that the work needs doing and decide to do it for you.

What the scripture says about this moment

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Joshua was standing at the edge of an impossible task after the death of the man who was supposed to lead. The formation system he had relied on was gone. The leader was dead. The task was harder than anything that had come before.

God did not send a replacement system. He issued a command.

Be strong. Now. Before you feel ready. Before the conditions improve. Before someone comes along to show you how. The command does not wait for the circumstances that would make obedience comfortable. It is issued into exactly the gap where the formation that was supposed to prepare you was absent.

That is not cruelty. It is the acknowledgment that the strength required is available right now, to this man, in this moment, regardless of what did or did not happen in his formation. The resource is present. The command is to access it.

Man training alone in a dark gym, no audience, just the work
Nobody is watching. Nobody is coming. The work is yours. Start.

What taking responsibility actually looks like

It does not look dramatic. It does not announce itself. It does not require a moment of clarity or a mentor who arrives at the right time or a community that has already figured this out and is waiting for you to join.

It looks like deciding, today, that the man you are becoming is your responsibility. Not the culture's. Not your father's absence. Not the church that failed you or the school that did not prepare you or the society that gave you mixed signals about what you were supposed to be.

Yours.

And then doing the small, consistent, undramatic things that formation has always required. Showing up to train when nothing is pulling you there except the fact that you said you would. Reading scripture when no one is tracking whether you do. Telling the truth when the easier option is available. Choosing the harder thing when the softer one would cost you nothing.

Not once. Not in a dramatic moment. Repeatedly. For years. Without an audience. Without a system that recognizes you for it. Without waiting for confirmation that the work is producing something.

That is what it means to take responsibility for your own formation. It has always been this. It will always be this. The systems that used to help are gone. The work remains.

FAQ

Is it fair to hold men responsible for their own formation when the systems that were supposed to help them failed?
Fair is the wrong question. The formation still needs to happen. The absence of systems that were supposed to help is a real loss. It does not change whose job the formation is.

What does self-formation look like without a mentor or community?
It looks like the small, consistent, undramatic choices made repeatedly without an audience. Training when nothing pulls you there. Reading scripture when no one tracks it. Choosing the harder thing when the softer one costs nothing. Community helps enormously. The absence of it does not make the work optional.

Can a man form himself without faith?
He can build discipline, capacity, and consistency. What faith provides that self-formation alone does not is a foundation that does not depend on his own performance as its source.

What is the first step toward taking responsibility for your own formation?
Stop waiting for the conditions to improve before you begin. Begin with what you have, where you are, today. The formation happens in the doing, not in the preparation for doing.

How does training fit into a man's self-formation?
As one of the few remaining environments that makes real demands, does not negotiate, and does not soften the experience to make you comfortable. The formation that happens in that environment transfers to every other environment where a man is asked to do a hard thing.

Nobody is coming. The work is here. The strength is available. Begin.
